Making new from old with Upcycle-it

By Andrew Gregory. Posted

We're producing waste at a phenominal rate. Things are used, disposed of then sent to landfill. However, it doesn't have to be this way. Rather than throw things away, we can upcycle old, no-longer-needed things into new, modern things of beauty. We chatted with Upcycle-it's Thomas Baumberger to find out how they did it.

"My name is Thomas Baumberger, and I started upcycling approximately ten years ago. The reason was that I was looking for lamps, and I couldn’t find what I was looking for. After visiting several shops, I decided to build my own. Luckily my first training was an apprenticeship as an electrician, so I had the necessary skills.

"I had a lot of fun making the lamp for myself, so I didn’t stop after I had built all my stuff. That was when I started selling my products and, over the years, my favourites became lamps.
It’s very inspiring to stroll around flea markets and check out the thrift shops. The exchange with other upcyclers is also a way to find and discuss new ideas and projects. upcycledhour.co.uk is also an excellent platform
